Quiet that Cough!

Whether it’s caused by allergies or an illness, a cough can keep your child from sleeping well.  Coughing can also affect your child’s ability to stay focused at school, it helps spread germs to others, and can cause a sore throat.  Coughing can also trigger vomiting for some kids.  Here’s a few ways to help quiet that cough.

Fresh pineapple has an enzyme called “Bromelain”.  Bromelain has been shown to be 5 times more effective to quiet a cough compared to cough syrups.  Plus, it’s a natural food and tolerated well without side effects.  The key is to make sure you use fresh pineapple.  Once you can it or cook it, you lose the enzyme effect.

We know that Vitamin C is important to help fight off infection.  One cup of pineapple juice has about 1/2 of what you need for the day of Vitamin C.   When you add other foods to pineapple, you’ll get added benefits.  For instance, honey can also help quiet a cough and soothe a sore throat.  Black pepper has an anti-inflammatory effect as do ginger and turmeric.

Try these recipes for quieting your little ones cough.

Pineapple tonic  mix all the ingredients below and sip on this all day long to quiet a cough  (keep refrigerated)

1 cup fresh pineapple juice

1/4 cup of freshly squeezed lemon juice

1 inch of ginger root

1 pinch of black pepper

1 tbsp of raw honey

Pineapple smoothie  blend all the ingredients together in a food processor and drink 2-3 x per day

2 large slices of fresh pineapple

1 inch of turmeric root

1 pinch of black pepper

3-4 strawberries

water to blend to consistency desired
