Healing Mind and Body is Treating the Whole Person
The philosophy of integrative medicine is a whole-person approach — designed to treat the entire person, not just the disease. The best health for a child can be the combination of mind and body healing and ultimately health promotion and disease prevention. The use of healthy foods is one aspect of this integrative approach — healing mind and body through good nutrition.
In the US, integrative medicine centers and training facilities are popping up all over the country. The Duke Center for Integrative Medicine is an example of integrative care combining conventional Western medicine with complementary treatments, such as herbal medicine, accupuncture, massage, biofeedback, yoga, and stress reduction techniques — all in the effort to treat the whole person.
Doesn’t it seem that our current “health care” system is more of an “illness care” system? Prescription medications tend to be the mainstay of therapy. Prevention of disease and the promotion of health and well being is a far distant thought. When was the last time your doctor or nurse practitioner recommended a food to help treat your illness? Now, don’t get me wrong…there is a place and a need for illness care and the life-saving treatments offered by very good doctors and nurses. However, as a nurse my training and focus has always been prevention and health promotion with illness treatment as an adjunct service. Integrative care is a solution to this dilemma. Integrative care and functional medicine provide a more healthful approach to healing mind and body through good nutrition and other complimentary therapies. Wouldn’t you rather maintain your child’s health rather than constantly be treating symptoms?
